What is IUI treatment?
Intrauterine insemination (IUI), a type of artificial insemination, is a fertility therapy where sperm is put directly into a person’s uterus.
During a natural conception, sperm has to move from your vagina to your cervix, into your uterus, and then to your fallopian tubes. Only about 5% of the sperm can get from your vagina to your uterus. When your ovary releases an egg, it goes to your fallopian tube. This is where the sperm and the egg meet, and this is where fertilization happens.
With IUI, the sperm is collected, washed, and concentrated so that only high-quality sperm are left. With the help of a thin tube called a catheter, this sperm is put directly into your uterus. This puts it close to your fallopian tubes. IUI treatment procedure makes it easier for the sperm to reach the egg because it cuts down on the time and distance it has to travel. This increases the likelihood that you may become pregnant.
IUI procedure is often tried before other, more invasive and expensive ways to treat infertility. IUIs can be done with sperm from your partner or from a donor. To make sure eggs are released during ovulation, a person can take fertility drugs.
How long does an IUI procedure take?
From the beginning to the end, the IUI procedure takes about four weeks, or about 28 days. It takes about the same amount of time as a regular period.
Before you and your partner start the IUI process, you will both have a thorough exam that could include blood work, a test of your sperm, an ultrasound, and other diagnostics.
Some people take pills for five days or get shots for up to two weeks to help them get pregnant. This makes it more likely that you will ovulate and release more than one egg. Not everyone needs these medicines.
It doesn’t take long to conceive a child. Putting the sperm in takes a few minutes. After that, your doctor or nurse may tell you to lie down for about 15 minutes.
After two weeks, you can take a test to see if you are pregnant.
Steps involved in IUI Procedure:
Your doctor must know when you ovulate. Timing sperm injection depends on ovulation.
Home ovulation predictor kits detect luteinizing hormone to determine ovulation time (LH). Blood testing can identify LH. Transvaginal ultrasonography can detect mature eggs. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) or other reproductive drugs are sometimes injected to induce ovulation. Ovulation occurs 10 to 16 days after your period begins.
Insemination occurs 24 to 36 hours after LH is found (in your blood or urine) or after the hCG injection.
Semen sample preparation:
Your spouse supplies fresh sperm for the iui procedure. Your partner can provide the sample prior and your healthcare provider can freeze it. Using a sperm donor means thawing and preparing the sample.
- “Sperm washing” concentrates healthy sperm for fertilization. The sperm bank sends washed donor sperm.
- Simple, quick insemination. Exam table. Similar to a Pap test, a speculum is inserted into your vagina.
- A catheter is introduced via the cervix into the uterus. Your doctor injects washed sperm into your uterus.
- Your doctor may ask that you lie down after the procedure. Fertilized egg implants in uterine lining after sperm fertilizes egg.
- Progesterone is given after IUI. Progesterone maintains the uterine lining and improves implantation.
- Two weeks after IUI,you can take a pregnancy test.
How to prepare before the IUI procedure?
Before you can start IUI, you’ll need a full medical exam and tests to see if you’re fertile. Your partner will also be checked out and put to the test. These things could be:
- A uterine exam.
- Ultrasounds of your uterus.
- A semen analysis.
- Screening for sexually transmitted infections.
- Blood tests.
Is IUI an effective procedure?
IUI can work very well, especially when drugs that help with fertility are used. When fertility drugs are used along with IUI, the chance of getting pregnant can be as high as 20%. IUI is most likely to work if the root cause of infertility and the age of the birth parent are known. IUI has a fertility rate of about 20%, which is about the same as a normal conception. This means that it helps people reach a more normal iui success rate.
Is IUI or IVF procedure better?
Because it has a greater success rate each cycle, in vitro fertilization (IVF) can lead to pregnancy a great deal more quickly. The average success rate per therapy is approximately fifty percent for patients under the age of 35. In vitro fertilization procedures have a success rate that ranges anywhere from 5 to 20 percent per cycle. In vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures typically produce positive results within the first three or four treatment cycles. Speak to your specialist to understand the difference between IUI and IVF.
