A Guide to the Best Natural Antihistamines

It’s not uncommon to have a bad reaction to over-the-counter medication, such as food allergies. It is, therefore, crucial to have at least a basic understanding of antihistamines, which are drugs used to treat allergies. 

Although antihistamines are not usually associated with serious side effects, consulting your general physician before taking any over-the-counter drug is recommended as some may be contraindicated with certain medications or health conditions. 

What Are Antihistamines?

Antihistamines are used to treat allergies (allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma). Antihistamines work by blocking the effects of histamine, a naturally occurring substance that causes itching, sneezing, watery eyes and other allergic reactions. Histamine is released by the body when it is exposed to certain types of allergens. These include foods, chemicals and irritants. 

Rhinitis is the medical term for inflammation or swelling of the mucous membrane that lines the nose. The symptoms of rhinitis or nasal allergies are:

  1. Itching in and around the nose.
  2. Sneezing.
  3. Watery eyes.
  4. A runny nose.
  5. It is sometimes associated with coughing and/or wheezing and sometimes causes a cough with bloody sputum (phlegm).

1. Lavender essential oil:

Apply a few drops of lavender essential oil to your temples and the back of your neck for relief from seasonal allergies. If you have sensitive skin, dilute it with a carrier oil like jojoba or coconut oil first. You can also add 5-10 drops to an unscented lotion or another moisturizer if you want the added benefit of a skin moisturizer as well! 

2. Aloe Vera:

Apply aloe vera gel to your skin for itch relief. If you don’t have any fresh aloe, here are some other things you can try: 

— Mix the pulp of one aloe vera leaf with a teaspoon of coconut oil. Apply the mixture to your skin. 

— Take 1/4 cup of aloe vera juice and mix it with 1/2 cup water. Blend in one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, stir well, and drink.  

3. Eucalyptus Essential Oil:

Apply a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil topically to your temples and the back of your neck for relief from seasonal allergies. If you have sensitive skin, dilute it with a carrier oil (jojoba or coconut oil would work well) first. You can also add 5-10 drops to an unscented lotion or another moisturizer if you want the added benefit of a skin moisturizer as well! 

4. Tea Tree Essential Oil:

Apply a few drops of tea tree essential oil topically to your temples and the back of your neck for relief from seasonal allergies. If you have sensitive skin, dilute it with a carrier oil (jojoba or coconut oil would work well) first. You can also add 5-10 drops to an unscented lotion or other moisturizers if you want the added benefit of a skin moisturizer as well! 

Topical Antihistamines: nasal sprays 

5. Nasal Spray:

Mix 1 drop of tea tree and lavender essential oils in a cup of water. Spritz it in your nose for relief from allergies. (You can also get a premade nasal spray at the health food store.) 

Oral Antihistamines

6. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea contains apigenin, a flavonoid that calms inflammation in the body. To make this tea, steep 1 tablespoon of chamomile flowers for 10 minutes in 1 cup of hot water. You can also drink chamomile extract if you prefer.  

7. Lemon Balm/Lemon Verbena Tea:

Lemon balm leaf and lemon verbena leaf contain rosmarinic acid, an anti-inflammatory that soothes itchy throats. To make this tea, steep 1 teaspoon of dried herb or 2 tablespoons of fresh leaves for 10 minutes in 1 cup of hot water. You can also drink lemon balm extract if you prefer.

8. Mint Tea:

Mint tea contains menthol, a natural decongestant that eases inflammation in the body and soothes irritated skin. To make this tea, steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb or 2-4 tablespoons of fresh leaves for 10 minutes in 1 cup of hot water. 

Antihistamines in the form of herbal formulas, pills, or drops are available at health food stores and online. Some of the best brands include:
